The vortex-like shape and colour within the Tristan and Isolde woodcut is a transposition of the magnificent minimalist set and predominantly blue lighting of the opera by Roland Aeschlimann. The design brilliantly alluded to both the womb-like hold of the ship, and worked as a metaphor for the intense maelstrom of their forced relationship. It was difficult to get away from the basics of Aeschlimann’s succinct and painterly approach to the staging of this production - TH
