Smoke II

Smoke II is set in Sicily under Mount Etna, which decided to erupt at the time I was there. I wanted to try and set up a paradox within the painting….with the figure in such contemplative introspection that she doesn’t seem to be aware or want to be aware of what’s going on above her and the possible impending doom of the smoking gun of the volcano.   Are the flickers of  red around her  hedge flowers or hot cinders of magma raining down from the mountain? Is she walking on a red pool-side path or like an Indian Fakir, is she  fire walking on hot coals of magma already? - TH
