Garden was made as one of the final images in my Lunar Voyage epic narrative, a modern day odyssean voyage to The Moon and back as a series of 17 woodcuts narrating an existential journey towards enlightenment. Only by leaving does our anti-hero discover the boundless love and edenic wonder he has left behind on Earth, to the backdrop of an understanding that our planet is a miracle of delicious life tucked away in our particular corner of the cosmos. Here the cosmonaut returns to his garden, younger than when he left, and finds it so overgrown that the home he has left behind, like in the Sleeping Beauty myth, is almost impenetrable. The storylines of Lunar Voyage fold and meander into each other so that time becomes inside out and events of his leaving and returning interweave in the imagery. A world full of adventure, premonitions, heroic decisions, (very much akin to and inspired by those of the NASA programme in the 60’s of endeavour backed up by sophisticated kit) regret and yearning - TH
